As a physician and management executive, for over 40 years Covello has been working towards the advancement of healthcare services in Brazil, by fostering a mindset based on the quality of care and patient safety. With this purpose, he assisted in developing the accreditation concept in the country, positioning the QGA company that I founded as the first Brazilian member certified by ISQua (International Society of Quality in Health Care).
His involvement in hospital management began early, shortly after completing my medical degree. At a time when the subject was still unfamiliar to many, he decided to specialize in Business Administration at Álvares Penteado School Foundation (FECAP). During medical school, he had his first encounters with the topic of quality management, something new for the healthcare market at that time.
The motivation to dedicate himself to ensuring quality of life, human well-being, prevention, and compassion stems from when his medical calling manifested in choosing Geriatrics and Gerontology as his field of practice, at a time when this medical specialty was not yet established in our country.
He is a member of the Advisory Committee of Accreditation Canada International, headquartered in Ottawa, Canada, where I was one of the individuals responsible for the development of the International Accreditation Program – Qmentum International, which has been implemented in over 50 countries.
Concerned about patient safety, he developed partnerships with the Canadian Patient Safety Institute and established the first patient safety program in Latin America. For many years, he served as the strategic director and board member of this program. Covello is also a co-founder of HSO – Health Standards Organization, a global entity centered on healthcare accreditation and quality standards, headquartered in Canada, with operations spanning over 35 countries.
Recently, I also contributed to the establishment of the Brazilian College of Health Executives (CBEXs), an unprecedented initiative in the country, where I serve as the Vice-President of the board.
Member of the Accreditation Council of ISQua – International Society of Quality in Health Care since October 2017. Nowadays, as Partner and CEO of QGA – Quality Global Alliance, I advocate for a better healthcare system for our country and for the world, with a focus on people.
Today, Rubens Covello is vocal and the representative from the healthcare sector on the World Council for Quality.
